Training and Walking My Unique Akita-Husky Mix: Meet Cjay

Training and walking my beloved Akita-Husky mix, Cjay, has been quite an adventure. While I'm aware that breed characteristics can offer some guidance, I've always recognised that our BFG is his very own personality and his needs are all his own.

Dedicated to All Dogs

Regardless of my own size, I am determined and experienced to help any dog, regardless of breed or size. My goal is to help as many dogs and their owners as possible, recognising the uniqueness of each furry companion!

Training and walking your dog is a journey that requires dedication, patience, and love. Cjay's unique personality has taught me that breed characteristics are only the starting point. Understanding your dog's personality and specific needs, and using positive reinforcement while staying consistent can help you build a strong bond with your four-legged friend. Every dog, no matter their breed or size, has the potential to make significant progress in their training.

Embracing the Challenge: Cjay's Unique Personality

Cjay is a charming blend of Akita and Husky, two breeds known for their stubbornness. With his laid-back demeanor, it took time for him to show interest in training and maintain focus. I learned that keeping our training sessions short and frequent was the key to getting through to him. Consistency was crucial – clear commands made it an easy win, especially for a dog as naturally lazy as Cjay.

Understanding Cjay's Triggers and Thresholds

Getting to know Cjay's triggers and thresholds was paramount for our training success. This understanding allowed me to tailor my training methods to his specific needs. In Cjay's case, I found that positive reinforcement, particularly treats, worked better than praise or play rewards.

Size and Strength: The Importance of Effective Training

Cjay's size and strength posed unique challenges for me as his owner. Cjay being a substantial 50kg, I had to ensure both his safety, and mine, in public and enjoyable interactions with other dogs. Effective training became a necessity to control Cjay's actions and behaviours. This not only kept him safe but, over time, also made encounters with other dogs a positive experience!

From Abandonment to Bond Building

Cjay's transformation over the past six years has been incredible. He was once a dog who had suffered abandonment and had little trust in people. Now, he eagerly anticipates our short training sessions, as they've become a way for us to build a strong and trusting bond.
